New Jersey Lawmakers to Review Gambling Ads and Smoking Rules

New Jersey Senator Joe Craven has introduced legislation that would place further restrictions on sports betting ads and promotions in the Garden State. Bill S421 has proposed placing restrictions that would prohibit New Jersey sports betting and casino operators from using fraudulent or deceptive ads. While the bill states that new rules would prohibit companies from reaching customers on self-exclusion lists and targeting ads towards anyone under 21, there are no details of any further restrictions.
There are also proposals for a complete smoking ban to take effect in New Jersey casinos. A current loophole means that while indoor smoking is banned throughout the state, casinos can still allow patrons to smoke on the gaming floor. That loophole allows for 25% of casino floors to be designated as smoking areas.

Multiple attempts have been made to close the loophole in recent years but none have gained traction with casino operators claiming that a complete ban would see fewer people visit casinos. However, a poll by Stockton University found that as many as 62% of those polled are in favor of a smoking ban at casinos.

Just last year, as many as 20 of the state’s 40 senators supported a complete ban on smoking in casinos. Yet despite that support, legislation failed to make it through the committee stage.

It’s hoped that the current proposals will be discussed ahead of the legislative summer break which begins on June 30th.
