New Zealand restaurant avoids jail despite reportedly running illegal gambling establishment

Recently, the co-owner of a Chinese restaurant in Newmarket, New Zealand, made headlines for allegedly operating an illegal gambling operation out of his establishment and distributing illegal cigarettes. Reimbursing the funds he received from his illegal activity was his only penalty. As per the Department of Internal Affairs, the maximum penalty for an individual hosting illicit gambling in New Zealand is US$6,229.
