New Zealandinches closer to regulated online gambling

The finalization of a new system for regulating gambling in online casinos has advanced in New Zealand.

Since there is currently no framework in place to regulate igaming, there are no safeguards against harm or player protection, which leads to some dubious actions from offshore operators, such as blocking withdrawals.

The government set 2026 as the deadline for enforcing the new regulatory framework, which would minimize harm and establish a tax collection system, according to plans initially presented earlier in July.

It’s about time New Zealand is setting up a regulated framework for online gambling! With no current safeguards, players are vulnerable to shady practices from offshore operators, so having protections in place is long overdue. The 2026 deadline gives time to build a solid system that ensures player safety, prevents harm, and even brings in tax revenue. Hopefully, this means better accountability for operators and more confidence for players. Excited to see how this progresses and the positive impact it could have on the industry and its players in New Zealand.
