NFL updates gambling policy with less punishments for cross-sports betting

The NFL has changed its gambling policy to increase penalties for players who wager on NFL games or attempt to fix them while lowering penalties for players who wager on other sports.

According to the revised gambling policy, players who wager on the NFL will be suspended indefinitely for a minimum of one year, and for a maximum of two years if it involves their own team. Match-fixing, whether actual or attempted, will result in a lifetime ban from the NFL.

Lowering penalties for betting on other sports besides the NFL makes sense to me. Players obviously shouldn't bet on their own league because that could influence games. The new rules focus more on preventing game-fixing or using insider info, so it keeps the main things fair while giving players more freedom as fans too.
