NHL deal means Arizona Coyotes owner still manages to keep hold of sportsbook

While the clock is running on Alex Meruelo's deadline to reactivate the Arizona Coyotes, the National Hockey League continues to refer to him as an owner.

Meruelo can continue to profit from sports betting in Arizona because he holds the title even though players have been sent to Utah. The first group listed in state law that qualifies for a sportsbook license is owners of professional sports teams.

Because he partners with an operator he also owns, Meruelo's Coyotes have a unique gambling interest.

SaharaBets handled about $7.6 million in wagers and paid about $48,000 in state taxes in about two years, according to state records.
