Ohio legislation approves double sports betting taxes in new budget

A $191 billion budget agreement was reached by the Ohio General Assembly last Friday, just hours before the fiscal year came to a close. The agreement calls for a 10% to 20% tax rise for sportsbooks.

According to state budget analysts, the higher rate would result in an increase of $100 to $135 million in sports betting taxes annually. Ohio's 20% tax puts it on par with states that impose the same rate, such Pennsylvania and Illinois.

Breweries are now included in the list of establishments that can apply for sports gaming licenses under the new regulation.
