Ontario proposing ban on athletes in betting advertisements

Sportsbook and other iGaming commercials involving athletes may soon disappear if gaming officials in Ontario have their way. The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario published a draft rule on Thursday that would oblige licensed businesses in the most populous province of Canada to stop all promotional arrangements with current or former athletes. The group also wants to outlaw the use of any famous endorser who could be anticipated to appeal to children. Cartoon characters, social media influencers, and entertainers are all included in the regulatory body's definition of a celebrity that appeals to young people. Not all deals with celebrities would be outlawed.
