Pennsylvania casino smoking targeted in state legislation

The Clean Indoor Air Act was passed in Pennsylvania in 2008. In most public locations and businesses, smoking indoors is against the law. However, the bill that was enacted makes several exceptions for bars, clubs, cigar lounges, and casinos where alcohol sales make up the majority of their earnings.

The governor disagrees that casino employees should be required to work in hazardous conditions where secondhand smoke is commonplace. Health experts claim that even though Pennsylvania casinos are only permitted to let indoor smoking on half of their gaming floors, harmful secondhand smoke nevertheless seeps into the ostensibly nonsmoking portions.

Avoiding smoking in casinos can have a range of effects, with potential benefits such as air quality for both customers and staff, as well as possible health improvements.

As someone who doesn't smoke, I'd prefer not to be in a smoky casino if I can avoid it. But I can understand why smokers would be unhappy too. Maybe casinos could have a small separate smoking area instead of banning it everywhere.
