Pet refuge trust welcomes charity lottery law change

The decision by Parliament to permit charities to run lotteries online indefinitely is being warmly received by Pet Refuge.

Prior to the end of October 2024, charities would have had to switch back to postal and in-person raffles, but temporary legislation enacted during the Covid-19 response permitted fundraising lotteries and raffles to be held online. However, the Internal Affairs Minister's amendment bill, which was approved by the house today, updates the law to reflect the modern era.

Pet Refuge has welcomed the recent decision by Parliament to allow charities to operate online lotteries indefinitely. This change means that charities no longer need to revert to traditional postal and in-person raffles by the end of October 2024, a requirement that was set to take effect prior to this amendment. The legislation, initially introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic to facilitate online fundraising, has now been updated to better align with contemporary fundraising practices, as approved by the Internal Affairs Minister.
