Poker player bluffed terminal cancer to get poker tournament buy-in

An individual from California has acknowledged that he lied about having colon cancer that was terminal in order to raise the $10K required to enter the World Series of Poker Main Event.

The person wrote on his GoFundMe page that he was a semi-professional player who had never had the money to enter the Main Event outright and questioned whether his dream would ever come true.

According to him, the necessity to realize his dream suddenly became more urgent after he was given between six and 18 months to live after receiving a Stage 4 cancer diagnosis in August 2022.

That was not right of the player to lie about having a terminal illness. While I understand wanting to live one's dream, raising money under false pretenses is deceitful. Going forward, I hope he finds honest ways to pursue poker and makes things right with those he misled.
