The jackpot for Powerball starts at $20 million and increases until someone wins. Mega Millions starts at $40 million and also increases until it is won. To play, players choose five numbers from a set of numbers for Powerball, and five numbers from a different set for Mega Millions. They also choose one "Powerball" number for Powerball and one "Mega Ball" number for Mega Millions. Drawings for both games are held twice a week.

The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are about 1 in 292 million, while the odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are about 1 in 302 million. In both games, the odds of winning any prize at all are much higher, but the prizes are much smaller.
