Queensland government endorses casino side venture of crime boss

The Queensland government has approved a casino owner's side business with a gangster associate of one of the most infamous in the world.

The $3.6 billion Star Brisbane casino project is scheduled to open this month, and proponents of gambling reform have called the government's support of the Hong Kong conglomerate as a suitable partner "laughable."

Casino license holders are prohibited from engaging in "any business association" with individuals who are "not of good repute having regard to character, honesty and integrity or has undesirable or unsatisfactory financial sources" by Queensland law.
