RESPONSE OF BGC TO CMS COMMITTEE REPORT

The BGC spokesperson welcomed the CMS Committee Report rejecting a complete ban on gambling advertising, sponsorship, and promotions.

They argue that such a ban would harm sports like horseracing and football, and pushing people towards unregulated online gambling.

The BGC agrees with the Committee on promptly publishing the Sport Sponsorship Code to enhance standards, emphasizing that betting ads must follow strict guidelines, promote safer gambling.

I completely agree with the BGC spokesperson's sentiment regarding the rejection of a complete ban on gambling advertising, sponsorship, and promotions. While it is essential to prioritize responsible gambling practices, a blanket prohibition would have severe consequences for sports such as horseracing and football. These sports heavily rely on the revenue generated from partnerships and sponsorships with gambling operators.

By banning advertising and sponsorship, these sports would face significant financial challenges, which could ultimately lead to their decline. Not only would this negatively impact the sports industry, but it would also reduce the number of opportunities and funding available for athletes, trainers, and other professionals involved in these sports.

Furthermore, implementing a ban would undoubtedly result in a surge in unregulated online gambling activity. If legal operators are unable to advertise and promote their services, consumers may be driven towards unregulated platforms that are not subject to the same regulatory scrutiny and protective measures. This would pose a greater risk to problem gambling, as these unregulated platforms may not have the same responsible gambling tools and support networks in place.

Instead of a complete ban, the more constructive approach proposed by the BGC is to focus on enhancing standards through the prompt publication of the Sport Sponsorship Code. This code should set out clear and stringent guidelines for how betting ads should be presented, ensuring they prioritize responsible gambling practices and do not appeal to vulnerable individuals.

It is crucial that gambling advertisements carry prominent messages promoting safer gambling and encourage responsible behavior. Additionally, the code should require operators to provide clear information about the risks and consequences of gambling, as well as details on how to access support services for those who may need help.

By adopting this approach, the BGC aims to strike a balance between allowing gambling operators to advertise responsibly while safeguarding individuals from the harms of problem gambling. This collaborative effort between the industry, regulators, and sports organizations is the most effective way to ensure responsible gambling practices are upheld while preserving the financial viability of sports heavily reliant on gambling partnerships.
