Richmond Grand Resort Casino developers agree to union terms

Should a referendum on the project pass in November, the prospective builders of the Richmond Grand Resort & Casino south of the state's capital city will employ union laborers.

Attempts to get permission to establish a casino resort next to the Philip Morris corporate headquarters along I-95 have been made for several years by Urban One, a Maryland-based, Black-owned and Black-focused entertainment conglomerate that owns and operates Radio One and TV One.

Richmond municipal officials chose Urban One over more seasoned gaming firms like Bally's and The Cordish Companies despite the latter's lack of experience in developing or maintaining a casino or hotel, in part to give equity in the capital metro.

It is truly heartening to witness developers and casino operators placing a significant emphasis on ethical labor practices by consenting to union conditions. This exhibits a profound dedication towards cultivating favorable working environments and guaranteeing that employees possess an active say in their place of work.
