Sitharaman clarifies that the 28% GST on gambling only applies to buy-ins, not winnings, amid worries over double taxation

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman explained on Wednesday that the 28 percent Goods and Services Tax (GST) applicable to online gaming, gambling, and horse racing will be levied on the initial buy-in rather than the earnings. After the 51st GST Council meeting, Sitharaman stated that every effort would be made at the federal, state, and local levels to approve the necessary legislation in Parliament and state legislatures so that the new rates could go into effect on October 1.
