St. Louis Cardinals baseball team willing to bankroll sports betting referendum

The St. Louis Cardinals and several other major sports franchises in Missouri are willing to fund a statewide effort next year that will ask voters if they want to allow sports betting. The Cardinals and other Missouri professional sports teams are attempting to take sports betting into their own hands. The Missouri Constitution empowers citizens and groups to initiate legislation through a referendum on a constitutional amendment.

The referendum initiative procedure, however, is expensive because a petition must first be drafted and filed to the state's attorney general. If the attorney general approves the text, the initiative's supporters will need to collect approximately 180,000 signatures in order to place the referendum on the next election ballot.
