Swedish gambling operators set to be allowed processing of personal data related to legal offenses

To enable operators to process customers' personal data in order to identify legal violations, the Swedish Parliament has approved amendments to the Gambling Act of 2018. The change permits licensed operators to handle information about legal infractions "under certain circumstances," such as identifying illegal activity, keeping an eye on questionable wagers, stopping match-fixing, and enforcing the law.

The move will take effect on February 1, 2025, and no motions were filed to oppose it. Licensees will be able to keep an eye on gambling accounts for odd betting patterns and assist law enforcement in identifying instances of sports corruption and match-fixing.
