The Dead Button rule is a rule in poker that is used in situations where the player to the left of the dealer is eliminated or otherwise leaves the table. In this situation, the dealer button moves to the empty seat, and the next hand is dealt without the eliminated player participating. The small blind and big blind positions are then adjusted accordingly. This rule is used to ensure that every player has an equal chance to be the dealer and to prevent any unfair advantages from being gained due to the dealer position. The rule is defined by the Tournament Directors Association (TDA) under rule 29.
