The difference between calling and 4-betting

Calling and 4-betting are both actions players take when facing a bet or raise. Calling simply matches the amount of the bet or raise. 4-betting means raising the initial bet or raise by a factor of four.

For example, if an opponent bets $10, calling would involve putting in $10 more. Whereas 4-betting that $10 raise would involve putting in $40 more, raising the total bet to $50.

4-betting can be a more aggressive move, indicating strength. But it often depends on position, table dynamics, and reads on opponents to determine if calling or 4-betting is the right play in the moment. Tactically used, both calling and 4-betting have their place at the poker table.

While 4-betting happens when a player makes a re-raise following three previous actions—an initial bet, a raise, and a re-raise—calling is when a player matches the amount of the current bet or raise made by another player.

Calling and 4-betting are two different strategies in poker, with distinct implications:
Calling:
- Joining the pot by matching the current bet
- Indicates a moderate hand strength, likely a drawing hand or a weak made hand.
4-Betting:
- Reraising the current bet
