The National Lottery Heritage Fund has granted the Portico Library on Mosley Street in Manchester a whopping sum of £453,964 to revamp their historic premises. The aim of their project, aptly titled Reuniting the Portico Library, Uniting People, is to transform the library, which was first established in 1806, into a welcoming and sustainable space for art, literature, education, and history.
The grand plan is to bring together all three original floors of the Grade II* Listed building, a feat not achieved in over a century. The proposed enhancements include an exhibition area and a delightful dining space, as well as a specialized bookstore dedicated to Northern literature. Additionally there will be a plethora of educational activities, a state-of-the-art lab for preserving the library's collections, and versatile areas for events and meetings of the utmost quality.
The upper floors, on the other hand, will be dedicated to preserving and enhancing the library's rich heritage, showcasing its impressive book collection, and stunning architecture. Collaborations with partners and a Critical Friends group will delve into the library's radical origins and explore its complex legacies in modern times.
