While luck certainly plays a role in any gambler's success, I believe the attributes that set consistently profitable lay bettors apart involve a combination of discipline, mental toughness and emotional control. The psychology of successfully betting against the bookmaker's odds over extended periods requires an ability to limit losses through strict bankroll management, brush off short term losses while keeping the bigger picture in mind, and avoid being influenced by the emotional highs and lows that come with the game. Is discipline the most important psychological trait? Or is it the ability to stay detached emotionally? I'd love to get your thoughts.
