The Psychology of Why Honest Dealers Rarely Cheat at Blackjack

While skillful card counting can improve the odds for players in blackjack, we rarely see honest dealers turning to cheating even after years on the job. What psychological factors make people refrain from dishonest behaviors, even when opportunities for gain seem high? In my experience as a winning player, I'd say things like a desire to maintain one's internal integrity and the fear of social reprimand if caught still hold powerful sway over most individuals. Do you think the risk/reward calculus around cheating ever shifts for dealers after seeing so many players win big?

Research has shown that the decision to act honestly or dishonestly can be influenced by a combination of personal morals, social norms, and situational factors. Some individuals may have a strong internal moral compass, which guides their decision-making and makes dishonest behavior less likely, even in situations where the potential gains are high. Others may be more susceptible to situational factors, such as peer pressure or the perceived likelihood of getting caught, which may sway their behavior.

In the case of dealers in casinos, there may be additional factors at play. First, dealers are typically closely monitored by their supervisors and security personnel, which makes cheating more difficult without getting caught. Second, cheating can be a fireable offense in the casino industry, which may act as a deterrent for dealers who value their job security.

While seeing players win big might create a sense of envy or jealousy for some dealers, the risk/reward calculus for cheating is still likely to remain unfavorable for most individuals. The potential gains from cheating are relatively small compared to the potential consequences of getting caught, which could include losing one's job, facing legal charges or fines, and damaging one's reputation and integrity.

Overall, it appears that a combination of personal morals, social norms, situational factors, and potential consequences all contribute to the decision-making process for dealers in casinos. While some individuals may be more susceptible to temptation than others, many dealers likely refrain from cheating due to a desire to maintain their integrity, job security, and reputation.
