The Significance of Chip Count vs. Big Blinds

The number of chips a player holds compared to big blinds holds importance. The more chips, the more flexible choices when it is your turn to act. A high chip count means ability to call many big blind bets, raise frequently, and stay in the game longer. A low chip count restricts options where calling one big blind bet uses most chips held. As chip count decreases, so does degree of freedom to play aggressively. Keeping a chip count at least ten big blinds provides more decision making ability compared to less than five big blinds where folding frequently becomes the only reasonable strategy. Therefore, chip count matters greatly in how freely and for how long a player can compete at the table.

Since the big blinds are typically stable in cash games, players tend to concentrate more on their chip count than on them. Because chip count directly reflects a player's financial equity in the game, it is more important in cash games.
