The Swedish regulator audit will be completed in September of next year.

Sweden’s National Audit Office has announced that the findings of a comprehensive evaluation into the effectiveness of the Gambling Authority as a regulatory body will be disclosed in September of next year. The regulator, known as Spelinspektionen, is currently undergoing an audit in response to the rapid expansion of the Swedish market, with the aim of ensuring its ability to effectively oversee the growing number of licensees within the country.

Since the re-regulation of the Swedish jurisdiction in 2019, the National Audit Office has stated that the expectations for the Swedish Gambling Authority's supervision have been set remarkably high. However, it also acknowledges that the conditions under which the authority carries out its duties have undergone significant changes.

Prior to the re-regulation, the regulated market predominantly consisted of Svenska Spel, ATG, and the four largest national lotteries, which accounted for more than 95 percent of the market's turnover. Following the re-regulation, a multitude of new players have entered the scene, resulting in the Gambling Inspectorate now having supervisory responsibility over approximately 600 license and permit holders.
