Treasurer spared jail after stealing £50,000 from parish church to fuel gambling habit

The court has granted freedom to a man who stole £50,000 from a parish church in County Down in order to feed his addiction to alcohol and gambling. As the only caregiver for his registered blind wife, the judge substituted a significant mitigating circumstance and the 66-year-old was instead given an 18-month prison sentence, suspended for twenty four months.
