Metal deflectors are diamond-shaped obstacles or small metal pieces that are placed on the outer half or the outermost circular half of a roulette wheel's apron or track. The metal deflectors help to regulate the movement and guiding of the ball as it spins, bounces and rolls around the track of the wheel. By hitting or deflecting the ball, metal deflectors increase the randomness of the ball's movements and reduce the predictability of the ball landing on a particular number or sector of the wheel.

Metal deflectors make the action of the ball more unpredictable. The deflectors provide an element of uncertainty by diverting the ball, making it difficult for players to correctly predict the winning number or sector during the game of roulette

The primary purpose of metal deflectors is to enhance the randomness and unpredictability of the ball's movement on the spinning wheel. When the croupier spins the roulette wheel, the ball is thrown in the opposite direction. As the ball loses momentum, it bounces off the deflectors, changing its trajectory and eventually coming to rest in one of the numbered pockets.
