Native American tribes or countries own and run tribal casinos. Because of their special legal standing as independent states within the US, these tribes are able to build and control casinos on their territory. Tribes are granted particular rights and powers to run their casinos as a result of their sovereignty. The majority of tribal casinos are situated on tribal lands, which are recognized as official territorial boundaries by the federal government. These lands may be tribal trust lands or reservations.
