Understanding the values of cards in blackjack is fundamental to playing the game effectively. Each card in a standard deck has a specific point value:
- Number cards (2 through 10) are worth their face value. For example, a 2 of hearts is worth 2 points, and a 7 of spades is worth 7 points.
- Face cards (Kings, Queens, Jacks) are all worth 10 points each. It doesn't matter whether it's a King of diamonds, a Queen of clubs, or a Jack of hearts—they're all worth 10 points.
- Aces can be worth either 1 point or 11 points, depending on which value benefits the player's hand the most. For instance, if a player has an Ace and a 7, the Ace can be counted as 11, making the hand's total value 18. However, if the player hits and receives a 10, resulting in a total of 18+10=28, the Ace's value is reduced to 1 to avoid busting, making the total 18+1=19.
