What happens when referees made mistakes in football sessions.

No one is perfect in his judgement and that is why referees are assisted in their officiating by linemen. It is not possible for a referee to notice all mistakes and offence perpetrated in football matches. So when errors are committed, it is the duty of other assisted officials to notify the referee who will act accordingly. In spite of all these, errors could still be committed. So what would happen where a referee made a mistake and is later discovered. Would the affected team be compensated or it would be overlook since it is not discovered during matches?.

When a referee makes a mistake during a football match, there are a few different scenarios that could occur.

Firstly, if the mistake is noticed by one of the assistant referees or fourth official during the game, they can bring it to the attention of the referee and the decision can be corrected immediately. For example, if the referee awards a goal incorrectly, the assistant referee may notify him that the goal should not have been given, and the decision can be reversed.

However, if the mistake is not noticed during the game and is only discovered afterwards, the situation becomes more complicated. In most cases, once a game has been played and the final whistle has been blown, the result stands and any mistakes made by the officials cannot be overturned. This is because football operates on the principle of accepting the referee's decision as final, even if it turns out to be incorrect.

There have been instances where mistakes made by referees have had significant impacts on the outcome of a match, and this can be incredibly frustrating for the team that was negatively affected. In these cases, the team may feel that they deserve compensation or a replay of the match. However, it is ultimately up to the governing body of the competition or league to decide what action, if any, should be taken.

In some cases, governing bodies have introduced technology such as video assistant referees (VAR) to help reduce the number of mistakes made by officials. VAR can review certain decisions and alert the referee to any potential errors. However, VAR is not used in all leagues or competitions, and even with its implementation, mistakes can still occur.

Overall, while the intention is to minimize the impact of errors made by referees, there is no foolproof system in place. Mistakes are a part of the game, and in most cases, the result stands regardless of any subsequent discovery of an error.

Due to these human errors, football governing bodies have approved the use of VAR in football matches. This use to mitigate against human errors and avoid blatant actions by referees. So far, VAR have change the narrative and improved football games.

Human error is part of life and we can't eliminate it from sports too. The objective though is to reduce the incidences of human error that can influence the results of matches. The spirit of sportsmanship requires that you take it in good faith and you move on from it. But in very rare occasions when it is so obvious, the match can be replayed.
