What is a "high card"?

A high card in poker is a hand that does not include any pairs, straights, flushes, or other card combinations. It is determined by the player's highest ranking card. The Ace is the highest-ranking card, so a hand with an Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and 8 would be regarded as having high cards.

In poker, a high card is the weakest possible hand, lagging behind all other card combinations. A high card is typically defeated by any other hand that has even a pair, including Texas Hold'em and Omaha. However, depending on the specific lowball game (for example, 2-7 Triple Draw or Razz), a high card may be a successful hand.

It is worth noting that in some situations, having a high card can be useful in poker as a tiebreaker. For example, if two players have a pair of Aces and the same kicker, the player with the highest second highest card (high card) wins the pot. Moreover, some starting hands in Texas Hold'em, such as Ace-King and Ace-Queen, are considered strong hands because they contain high cards, even though they don't match.

It is important to keep in mind that high cards should not be relied on heavily to win pots in poker. As they are easily beaten by stronger hands, it is advisable to focus on developing a strong range of hands with pairs, straights, flushes, and other combinations of cards to give yourself the best chances of winning.

In various card games, a "high card" refers to a playing card that has a higher rank than other cards in the same game but does not belong to any specific suit. The concept of a high card typically comes into play when determining the relative strength of hands or resolving ties in certain situations.
