Set mining in poker is a strategy where a player calls a preflop raise with a pocket pair with the primary aim of hitting a set on the flop. A set is a three-of-a-kind hand where two of the cards are in the player's hand, and the third one is on the board. The reason behind set mining is to win large pots as sets are strong hands that can be difficult to identify for opponents. The strategy is typically employed when the player has a small or medium pocket pair, such as 22, 33, 44, etc. By calling the raise and hitting a set on the flop, the player can often win a large pot as opponents are frequently unaware that they are up against a set. However, set mining is a high variance strategy, meaning that it can be risky and result in the player losing chips if they miss their set, which occurs fairly often.

This tactic called set mining works best when a player has a little or medium-sized pocket pair that is played in position and lets them to easily escape if they don't make their set. This way, they can control the amount of the pot.
