The Canfield Expert card counting system is a simple 1, Level 1, balanced counting strategy optimized for Playing Efficiency found in Richard Canfield's book "Blackjack Your Way to Riches," published in 1977 2. It assigns values of +1 to 3, 0 to 7, and -1 to ace and 9. As a balanced system, the count should start at 0 and, after playing through the entire deck or shoe, end back at 0. The Canfield Expert system is widely considered to be a beginner-friendly and relatively simple card counting strategy for blackjack players.
