What is the M-ratio?

In poker, the M-ratio is a measure of the health of a player's chip stack in a tournament, relative to the cost of playing each round. Specifically, the M-ratio is the number of rounds a player can survive with their current chip stack size, assuming only the cost of the blinds and antes. The formula for calculating the M-ratio is:

M-ratio = (Number of Chips) / (Small Blind + Big Blind + Antes)

The higher the M-ratio, the more comfortable the player's chip stack is. A low M-ratio indicates that the player's stack is in danger of being blinded out, which means they are running out of chips and will soon be eliminated if they don't win some hand. A healthy M-ratio depends on the stage of the tournament the player is in, as well as the player's style of play.

Players with low M-ratios must take proactive measures to avoid being eliminated because of ante and blind pressure. Players with high M-ratios, on the other hand, have the luxury of extra time to be patient and wait for favorable areas to assemble additional chips.

A higher M-Ratio suggests a player has greater play flexibility, whereas a lower M-Ratio suggests a player is susceptible to blind spots. When deciding how aggressive or conservative to be with their chip stack, this metric aids players in making well-informed decisions.
