In blackjack, the "mechanic's grip" refers to a way of holding the deck of cards that allows for the dealer or cheater to deal cards from the bottom or second card in the deck without being detected. It involves holding the deck in the left hand with the thumb at the near edge of the deck and the fingers at the far edge, with the index and middle fingers separated slightly so that they can grip the bottom or second card. This grip is sometimes used by blackjack dealers but is also used by cheaters to deal the second card to themselves or an accomplice.
