I believe poker involves both skill and luck, but the balance between the two has always fascinated me. Here are some of the factors that go into my opinion on why poker can be seen as both a skill game and a stupidity test:
Poker certainly requires skill and strategy to win over the long run. Players must read opponents, calculate odds, and make optimal bets and raises. This differentiates great players from average ones. However, even the best players lose a significant portion of the time due to the inherent random factor in the cards being dealt. Some big losses can be attributed to risky "stupid" plays that didn't pay off.
So when I've had a bad beat or lost a big pot with pocket aces, I try to remember that poker needs a bit of recklessness and gambling spirit to make it fun. The skill lies in minimizing those "stupid" mistakes and maximizing gains over countless hands and hours of play. But every so often, a little illogical move can make the game more entertaining for everyone at the table. What do you think? Where would you fall on the scale between skill and luck when assessing poker? I'd love to hear your thoughts.
