The most memorable poker tales involve rivalries between players. Against worthy opponents, we strive to outplay and outlast them. Their every victory against us only increases our determination for when we finally win a big pot, the satisfaction is greatly increased. We enjoy recounting these struggles to fellow cardsharps. Stories describe the close calls, subtle plays, costly mistakes and miraculous runs of luck. Some rivalries become quite fierce with trash talk and other antics. Yet the competition almost always ends with mutual admiration for an opponent who helped push one's own game forward. These are the opponents we respect the most and the stories we retell with the greatest enjoyment.
