Alabama gaming expansion compromise dead by single vote

A compromise reached by a special legislative committee was blocked in the state Senate by a single vote, meaning that Alabama's gaming expansion will be delayed for at least another year.

A compromise gaming package reached by a conference committee last week came up short of the required three-fifths majority in the upper chamber by one vote. This was a similar result.

Three state senators and three house delegates made up the committee that suggested the state establish a lottery and permit electronic gaming machines at pari-mutuel wagering establishments.
