Lay Betting on Favorites Versus Underdogs

Some new bettors put most of their money on favorites thinking they are 'safe' bets but I prefer to go the other way. Which strategy brings more profits in the long run, betting on favorites who win 50-60% of the time or on underdogs who win 30-40% but with bigger payouts? While favorites do have more chances, the profits from an occasional winning underdog bet multiplying your investment can outweigh total gains from many mediocre favorite wins. What do others think? Wins or profits, which one should carry more weight in our betting decisions?
