Local authorities urged to enforce measures against gambling harm

Following the publication of the government's white paper on gambling a year ago, the Association of Directors of Public Health is calling on local authorities to assume the responsibility of mitigating the negative effects of gambling.

There are currently hundreds of gambling-related deaths each year in England alone, and one in every twelve people in the UK suffers from gambling-related injury. Countless others struggle with their finances and have poor physical and mental health.

People who belong to minority groups and reside in the most disadvantaged areas are disproportionately at risk due to the unfair distribution of these negative impacts. A new generation of consumers is being created as a result of the increased exposure of children and youth to gambling products, in addition to the current harm they cause.
