Long Island casino critics seeking stoppage of environmental review

Opponents of Las Vegas Sands' plan to erect a casino and hotel at the location of the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York, are pressing the neighboring town of Hempstead to halt an environmental assessment that could facilitate the project.

Two interconnected factors could pose a significant obstacle to Sands' pursuit of one of the three downstate casino permits. The three casino licenses could be granted in the second half of this year by New York regulators, as the state's high courts are known for their protracted hearings in environmental cases.
