Man spends Covid-19 benefits on gambling

An individual from Auckland, who mistakenly utilized almost $200,000 from the Covid-19 wage subsidy scheme for gambling, adult entertainment, and quick dining, will persist in incarceration. Despite attempting to have his sentence commuted to home confinement, Nathan Downey's request was denied. Judge Mina Wharepouri at the Manukau District Court had previously sentenced him to a term of 20 and a half months' imprisonment.

While the punishment fits the crime, I do wonder what was really going on beneath the surface for this guy. This sort of behavior often stems from deeper issues like addiction. Hopefully he gets the help he needs now too, not just the time served.
