Mega Millions winner claims prize, but details are hidden legally

The $1.602 billion Mega Millions jackpot winner from August showed up to claim the reward on Monday, September 25, but lottery officials are keeping quiet about the winner's name due to a recently approved Florida law.

The $1.6 billion jackpot reward becomes Mega Millions history's highest annuitized jackpot prize. The jackpot's one-time cash value option, which was $794.2 million, was less than the $1.537 billion annuitized jackpot won in October 2018 by a player in South Carolina due to the high federal interest rates.

State officials also chose not to disclose whatever payment method the winner used because the Florida Lottery was legally prohibited from disclosing information about the winner. It's possible that the state's regulations on claiming awards swayed the winner's favor.
