New Jersey legislators advances bill to ban college player prop markets

A bill that would forbid licensed operators in the state from providing or taking bets on college player prop markets is being advanced by lawmakers in New Jersey.

Following its introduction last month, a bill was advanced by the state's Assembly Tourism, Gaming, and the Arts Committee. As student-athletes nationwide experience an increase in gambling-related harassment, the bill specifically outlaws college player prop betting in the state.

It's good to see New Jersey taking steps to protect college athletes from the pressures and potential harassment that can come with player prop bets. Banning these specific types of bets can help reduce the focus on individual student-athletes, which is especially important given the rise in gambling-related harassment issues. This bill could set a positive precedent for other states by showing that there are ways to support sports betting responsibly while also prioritizing player welfare, particularly for young athletes.
