New York comptroller urges lowered expectations for casino tax revenues

According to New York Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, while commercial casinos create new jobs and boost the local economy, they are not a panacea for local host governments looking for significant new tax income sources. A statewide referendum that legalized four upstate and three downstate commercial casinos was approved by New York voters in 2013. To prevent the crucial downstate market from competing with the upstate resorts, a 10-year prohibition on the state issuing licenses for the downstate was added.
