Thailand travel agency executive champions potential major impact of casinos in tourism

Casinos and other related attractions will greatly increase the number of foreign tourists coming into Thailand according to a senior executive of an online travel agency. As countries dependent on tourism move closer to legal gaming, only certain forms of gambling are allowed in Thailand. This includes state-regulated horse racing and official lotteries but illegal activities persist. Previous attempts to legalize gambling failed due to conservative and popular opposition to opening casinos. The lack of legal casinos in Thailand means the country is losing out on state revenue and is a huge boost to tourism, the government says.

A senior executive from an online travel agency believes that casinos and related attractions could significantly boost foreign tourism in Thailand. Currently, only state-regulated horse racing and lotteries are legal, while other forms of gambling remain prohibited. Past efforts to legalize casinos have faced resistance from conservative groups and public opposition. The government argues that the absence of legal casinos results in lost revenue and missed opportunities to enhance tourism. Legalizing casinos could position Thailand as a more competitive destination in the region’s growing gaming market.
