700 union workers launch 48-hour strike at Las Vegas casino

After attempting for months to come to an agreement on a new five-year contract with Virgin Hotels, about 700 employees at a hotel-casino close to the Las Vegas Strip left their jobs on Friday morning in what union organizers said would be a 48-hour strike.

The last time a strike by Culinary Union members occurred was at the Golden Gate hotel-casino in downtown Las Vegas in 2002.

According to Culinary's earlier statement, earlier this year, union members at other properties in the Las Vegas area received deals that amounted to a salary increase of about 32% over five years, with 10% coming in the first year.
