In poker, what is a "cold call"?

A "cold call" in poker is when a player raises or bets without having made any previous bets or raises in that betting round. It usually happens when a player is up against two or more successive aggressive moves and chooses to call the most recent bet or raise without making their own move.

Here is an illustration of a cold call:

Player A raises from an early position in the pre-flop action.
The next player to act, Player B, chooses to call the raise without placing any bets or raising during that betting round. We call this a cold call.

Following players might choose to fold, call, or raise based on their own hand strength, the strength of the initial raiser's hand, and the likelihood of the cold caller having a strong hand.

Cold calling can be seen as a passive play, as the player is not taking the initiative to bet or raise themselves. It is often used as a defensive play, when a player suspects their opponent has a strong hand but still wants to see the next card without committing too many chips to the pot.

However, cold calling can also be a strategic play, as it can induce other players to call and create a bigger pot, or it can disguise the strength of a player's hand. It all depends on the context of the game and the specific situation.

I think In poker, a "cold call" refers to calling a bet or raise without having previously invested any money into the pot during that betting round. For example, if a player raises the bet and the next player calls without having previously bet or raised in that round, that is a cold call. It is called a "cold" call because the player is entering the pot withouthaving any momentum or prior investment in it.
